Why We Chose Thailand Over Other Countries

Introduction

Moving away from the United States did not happen overnight. The idea grew slowly as daily life became harder to manage. Costs kept rising. Stress felt constant. Over time, we began to ask ourselves a simple question: Is this really how we want to live?

Rent, healthcare, and everyday expenses kept climbing. At the same time, news about violence and social tension made us feel uneasy. Living in the Warner Robins, Georgia area no longer felt stable or affordable. We realized we needed to look at other options, even if that meant leaving the country.

After months of research and travel, Thailand became the place that felt right for us — both financially and emotionally.

What First Made Us Look Outside the U.S.

Several things came together and made us start thinking about life abroad. Money was a major factor. Rent in our area climbed quickly. Condos often cost more than $1,500 a month, and houses were over $2,000 — before utilities. On top of that, we were paying for loans, car costs, insurance, food, and everyday needs.

Health also played a role. While my husband’s health was stable, I had already gone through multiple surgeries. We both carried extra weight, which raised long-term concerns. Doctor visits were short and costly, often over $100 just to refill regular medication.

Safety added to our stress. Constant news about shootings, robberies, and violence made everyday life feel tense. Work stress was not extreme, but pressure to return to the office made work feel draining instead of productive.

We had very little travel experience at the time. Canada was the only country we had visited. Even so, staying where we were no longer felt right.

The Moment We Realized We Needed a Change

There was no single event that pushed us to leave. Instead, it was a slow build-up of small moments. Each one made us stop and think about the life we were living.

We noticed how often we talked about money. We noticed how tired we felt at the end of each day. We noticed how little time we had for ourselves. These small moments added up until we could no longer ignore them.

That’s when we started looking at life outside the United States.

Why the Cost of Living in Thailand Made Sense

Money played a major role in our decision. When we arrived in Thailand, daily costs stood out right away. Rent, food, and transportation were far lower than what we were used to in the U.S.

Here are a few things that surprised us:

  • We can eat well for under $10 per day for two people.

  • We do not need a car. Public transportation like the BTS and MRT is clean, affordable, and easy to use.

  • When needed, we use Grab, Bolt, or taxis. Most rides cost under $15, even for longer trips.

  • Monthly expenses feel predictable and manageable.

Before moving, we used Numbeo to compare living costs between countries. What we found matched our real experience once we arrived. While money was not the only reason we chose Thailand, it gave us breathing room we did not have before.

What Daily Life in Thailand Feels Like

Everyday life in Thailand feels simple and convenient. Stores, malls, pharmacies, and restaurants are close by. Public transportation makes it easy to get around without stress. Life moves at a slower pace, but nothing feels hard to access.

We still enjoy modern comforts. We don’t feel like we gave anything up. Instead, daily life feels calmer.

One thing that surprised me most was safety. I feel comfortable walking at night without fear. People around us feel warm, polite, and genuine. That sense of ease has been one of the biggest gifts of living here.

What Surprised Us Most About Thailand

When we first arrived, we expected everything to feel unfamiliar. Instead, we found comfort in small, everyday moments. These surprises helped us settle in faster than we expected.

A few things stood out right away:

  • People were kind and patient.
  • Food was fresh, affordable, and easy to find.
  • Public transportation was clean and simple to use.
  • We felt safe walking at night.
  • Life moved at a calmer pace.

These small surprises made Thailand feel like home much sooner than we imagined.

Why Thailand Stood Out Over Other Countries

Thailand was not the only place we considered. We spent time looking at several options. We compared Thailand with Ghana and also looked into Panama and Bali.

Panama was hard to research because housing options were limited online. In Ghana, many homes in our price range had heavy security bars, exposed wiring, and layouts that did not feel comfortable for us. Bali interested us, but it was closed to tourism during COVID when we were ready to travel.

What made Thailand stand out was safety, cleanliness, and housing quality. The final moment that sealed our decision came during our second visit. We tested real routines like grocery shopping and pharmacy visits.

I was shocked to learn I could refill medication without repeated doctor visits. That moment showed us how practical and livable Thailand could be.

Countries We Considered and Why They Didn't Fit

We didn’t choose Thailand right away. We looked at several countries and tried to imagine daily life in each one. Every place had something good to offer, but not every place felt right for us.

Here’s what we found:

  • Ghana: Affordable, but many homes had heavy security bars and layouts that didn’t feel comfortable.

  • Panama: Hard to research. Many housing options were not listed online.

  • Bali: Interesting, but closed to tourism during COVID when we were ready to travel.

Thailand was the first place that felt safe, clean, and practical for long-term living.

Who Thailand Is a Good Fit For

Thailand can be a great choice for the right people. It works well for those who want a calmer lifestyle and can support themselves with steady income.

Thailand may be a good fit for:

  • Retirees with Social Security or pension income
  • Remote workers with income from outside Thailand
  • Teachers with a college degree
  • Singles or couples wanting a slower lifestyle

Thailand may be difficult for:

  • People without steady income or savings
  • Those looking for local jobs without a degree
  • Anyone expecting many job options for foreigners

Living abroad requires planning and personal responsibility. We always remind people not to rely on short videos alone. Research matters.
